Reminding me of Bam Bam

Yesterday was a busy day. The federal budget was announced in Canada and our firm gets a quick one page tax summary out ASAP afterwards, so a bit stressful, but in a good way. One of those days though, that looking at some cards is a nice stress reliever.

Highlights:

I've mentioned before that I liked these Collector's Choice cards across any sport. Here we have two very solid players as well. Randall Cunningham and Lawrence Taylor. Truth be told, my best memory of Lawrence Taylor are from his wrestling match against Bam Bam Bigelow at Wrestlemania XI. As far as having celebrities in wrestling, this was the best participation until probably a certain broken nose to Big Show. He was a huge name at the time which made it a big deal, and there were big deals since such as Tyson and Trump, but he was one of the good ones from the earlier years.

Keepers:

Again just the one, similar to yesterday. Unfortunately another bombardment of football as shown below...

Traders:

Yeah, lots more 1991 Upper Deck football...including two Anthony Carter cards...but more importantly - an Austin Powers card! One I did already have though...

The ripple effect

I will say right off the bat, many people won't consider these error cards in the usual sense of the word. We generally consider error cards to be errors on the card, be they grammatical, incorrect picture, incorrect stats, etc. Personally, I would also consider the following highlight card one as well...

Highlight:

I needed this card for the 2007-08 Upper Deck set as it was, but will need another one because this will be kept as an error card. You can see that the bottom of the card must have been caught when packaged and crimped in the machine during packaging. Actually, it is a nice even crimp right across the bottom of the card, so as good as such an error gets.

The rest
Keepers:

Just the one other keeper today. Ray was nearing the end of his career here with 15 seasons under his belt.

Traders:

Todd Lyght...looks like somebody called his momma. Wonder how many cards there are with family members included. There would be obvious ones such as brothers playing in the same league or in pro sports, but how many of these not so typical ones...that would be an interesting collection, though probably fairly small. That all said, I have absolutely no idea if that is who is in the picture with him - but just an educated guess.

Also a shame to get a couple dupes in the same 20, but since I am getting 3 or 4 of these 1991 Upper Deck football cards as it is, guess it doesn't matter much getting them together like this, or in separate pulls...

One more...

Highlight:

For those following the last few days, another 2008-09 O Pee Chee Retro parallel. This brings us up to 90 cards.

The rest
Keepers:

Excellent add of three more Upper Deck 2007-08 cards cards, but also another Mike Richards - another player I always feel I see more of than I probably do - like Samsanov.

Traders:

Okay...I'm getting a bit tired of the amount of 1991 Upper Deck football out of this. I am going to have a whole bunch to get rid of when all is said and done, and will probably be lucky to get $5 for it.  The good here though is the 2008 Donruss Threads insert is very nice, and one I haven't seen before this as well.

Not a great 20 overall, but we will call it a middling day.

It's a good day - yes it is

Any time you can say an entire pack was a highlight is a good day - and that is what we have today. We have had a stretch of cards from single sets such as 1991 Upper Deck football, but today we have a number of cards from a single parallel set, though the set shouldn't be a surprise.

Highlights:

I almost missed that the Rainbow retro parallelo for 2008-09 O Pee Chee hockey was serial numbered because it is small and in the back bottom left corner, but there you have it. How awesome is a checklist being serial numbered?

I could be disappointed there are no Leafs here, but I will instead focus on the fact that I needed all 19 of these and now have over 85 of the retro parallel cards. As I said, doubt I will finish this set, but really like getting these and increasing what I do have.

Awesome 20 today, even if there isn't much to say about them other that, they really do look great together and would be nice in a binder...but let's not get ahead of ourselves on the set as a whole.

Though REALLY pretty would be the rainbow serial numbered parallel as a set....

Trading with Clmdesign - Part 2!

Yesterday we covered all the non-Jays stuff...today - all Jays!

We start in the early 80s, with cards I needed. Buck Martinez always had a good 'stache.

Glad to get some early 80s Fleer cards. Topps seems to be fairly easy to find and trade for, but Fleer - not so much.

The first chunk of baseball cards I ever had were 1984 O Pee Chee - so the Topps cards are a nice reminder. Those cards are long gone, but were the first that really drew me to collecting.

Again with Fleer cards - love the stickers too! Will say that Dennis Lamp does make a good challenger to Buck for mustaches.

Probably my most favourite card of the entire box is the Milk Bone Paul Molitor card. Any time I can get an oddball Jays card like this is a great day.

So many thanks to Clmdesign for a great trade package all around - very fun to go through.

Trading with Clmdesign

So a week or so ago, I completed a box for box trade with Clmdesign. All in, it was about 700 cards I believe. The biggest chunk of the cards I received were parts of two sets that I may not work on completing - 1987 Topps and 1988 score.

Here are the Jays and error cards out of the bunch. As for the rest - I think we have all seen enough of these sets - and I am going to be lazy and not scan the rest of the cards, though all good and updated at the tradingcarddb.com.Speaking of moving forward on set completion...

These bring me another 1% closer to completing the 1990 Donruss set - now just over 91% done. It, and the next set, are ones I should specifically focus on just wrapping up...

1989 Topps needs filled as well. Excellent! Now down to just 18 cards remaining on the set...

What else non-Jays was included in the box...

These are 1988 Score Young Superstar cards. I like the gloss on these cards, and before this I only had one Jay card. It is a 40 card set, so I don't expect to go out of my way completing the set which I believe, you could have mailed in to get back in the day.

Last non-Jays cards in the box which I still love for being inserts...

I miss Kirby. A shame he passed away so young. I really like how well the Chipper Topps insert scans - such a nice blazing blue.

Well the rest were Jays , and we will save those until tomorrow....but hang on! There were some hockey cards too!

Error cards. It is for this reason that, once I get a few more sets completely out of the way, I will work on completing 1990 Pro Set. Probably one of my favourite hockey sets ever, in large part because of all the error cards.

A small hodgepodge of cards, all new to me. I dislike how the Donruss 1993-94 scan, but in hand don't mind the corner foil - though it would be better a bit smaller.

Lastly, some inserts. I generally like the Biography of a Season insert sets, they do a decent job of highlighting moments of interest through the season.

There you have it....part one of the trade round up! More tomorrow!

New sets....yay!

A couple new sets popping up today, so I had to make those the highlights since there is nothing else overly significant today.

Highlights:

I won't be keeping either of these, but for different reasons. I had not seen the ESPN basketball set before. It is a decent little design though - not against it at all. As for the hockey card, I actually have this PowerPlay base set, so no need for the Chara either, but very happy to see these new sets..especially since we are 7,000 plus cards in, still seeing new sets is great!

Lowlight:

A tragic victim of 1991 Upper Deck football stickiness...as you can see given the black border, some heavy white stuck on the one side from the football card next to it...actually some on the back as well...

The rest
Keepers:

Just the one keeper, but at least it is another 2008-09 O Pee Chee parallel.

Traders:

A bunch of 1991 Upper Deck football again...but also some continued retro with the 1986 Retro look 2008-09 Fleer Rookie of Brandon Rush.

A Golden Pedro

Okay, so not the most creative of names for the post, but at least you know (for the most part) what you are getting. I can respect the abilities of Pedro Martinez on the diamond, but generally from his attitude and in some cases, actions, specifically his interactions with Don Zimmer, I'm not a fan of the man.

Highlights:

Doesn't mean I don't really like the look and feel of this insert card. Maybe a bit too much empty space on the front that much more could have been done with, but a nice insert from a solid set.

Add with that the Leaf 2007-08 Upper Deck Ice card for Alexander Steen, and these pretty much make up for the excess football you'll see later.

The rest
Keepers:

Nor much, but have to like any of the 2005 Leaf Certified cards.

Traders:

Well, I took a look and out of the 500 1991 Upper Deck football cards, I have about 77 missing (this doesn't include the last 200 which are really the high number or update or whatever you would like to call them, cards). More 2007 Topps football, filling a couple holes, and unfortunately no other new Ice hockey cards in trying to complete that set.

Still...that gold Pedro sure is nice...

Getting a missing 2005 Upper Deck Classics card

I was missing just a single base card to get the 100 knocked off the list as a complete base set - not including the Retro Star Rookies cards which make up 101-130. Well, I got a new card from the set, but not the one missing I wanted...

Highlight:

That is an awesome card. Not the Foxx card I was looking for, but an amazing photo of a Yankee great. Such a solid player - lifetime .307 hitter - as a Jays fan in the late 80s on, I would have wished him to be a Jay during that time...

The rest
Keepers:

Yup. Just 2008-09 O Pee Chee - nothing more, nothing less, but a bunch of decent cards - especially the Anderson card.

Traders:

Nothing much here to care about for myself, but maybe there is for you...just let me know.
