Well, this post won't take long...

First the happy. I went through the 1991 Ultra part of the Thanksgiving cards I picked up. I only needed a single card to complete the set - the illusive card 387 Mo Vaughn. SO my hoopes for this was easy, just get one card I need...so what did I get...

Yeah - I think I got that one card covered....

As for the error cards, just one added as I had most of them already for this set...

Good excuse for some big hurt.

With the Jays, there were 80 cards in total, but I won't scan all the duplicates, so here is the team set...

Yeah, so the Santa Lot has nothing for me today...but not as big a deal given completing 1991 Ultra at least.

Highlight:

Turkey Red design though, is enjoyable regardless of the sport. Personally wouldn't mind some more of these in baseball form. I have a couple from trades which are Jays, but yeah, more would be great.

Not much going on with these, though I thought at first I may have been "missing" one of the Austin Powers cards, but it didn't end up that way - had both already. It does inch us up to 297 - just a few cards short of 300...I better get that Kijiji ad ready....

Man, hope tomorrow is better....

Breakfast with Tiffany and Bowman

Another Thanksgiving card set gone through....1991 Bowman. I had 39 of the 704 cards before going through these cards, and this moved the set fairly well along. All in, now up to 602 of 704 - just over 85% which isn't too bad. I also filled a couple holes for the Jay and error binders...

I actually somehow only had one or two of the Jays cards before, so this was a good add for the Jays as well. The couple errors are both numbering errors - card numbers being incorrect. I can atleast understand for Griffey, that father and son incorrectly had the same number put on them.

Tiffany parallels frustrate me. I find they are easily missed unless you look at each and every card in the right light. In simple terms, they are just glossy, but for the sets of the late 80s - that isn't much of a difference. So, I almost missed this one thinking it was a base card - it wasn't until I was holding it to scan it that I noticed it was glossy.

Highlight:

I am not sure if the border is usually as off white as here, or if it is age, because this is the first 1988 Topps Traded Tiffany card I have. I will say, I do prefer the back compared to the 1988 Topps base set because the backs are so much brighter, but that is true with the regular traded cards and the Tiffany parallel.

The rest
Keepers:

If it wasn't for the Tiffany parallel, this would be the highlight because it is Datsyuk, and from a set we have seen few cards from.

Nice to see another Series 1 2007-08 Upper Deck Hockey card since there has been way too many of series 2.

Traders:

A few different things to touch on here...but I will do in short form...

Grant Hill was a player I paid some attention to back in the day, I thought he carried himself well on and off the court, and nice to get a little received set.

Same with the SP basketball card - not seen many of these.

More McDonalds hockey, even as dupes is fine by me, as it should help make trading to complete the sets easier if needed.

Time to Gross out

I know I haven't talked much about the World Series - I am following it, I just figure everyone is talking about it around the blogs, and with the teams involved, those that are more invested in it that I. With the Jays out, it is of less interest to me, but still curious to watch for good baseball.

Before we get to the real gross out, some consider 1990 Donruss pretty gross because of the very red design. Frankly, I don't mind it too much, and I am sure Reds collectors find it pretty nice. Plenty of the red stuff in the Thanksgiving cards - actually only a few cards (say 100) that were not good enough condition for me to keep. I have the base set done, but still gained a few collection cards.

Standard Jays for the set.

A number of error and variation cards. Most of these are the All-Star cards which came with backs detailing all star performance or recent stats.

Though I do have the base set done, I am missing a couple of the bonus cards and would like to get those done. I also would like a dupe set of the Diamond King cards and I am most of the way there on that as well.

Why not open something that I have no interest in keeping, but that should be at least worth a laugh? These are coming out of 1988 and were an earlier...grosser take on what would be in the same vein as the looney tune baseball cards circa 1990, and somewhat similar to Garbage Pail Kids, though not as disgusting generally.

Just right off the bat - I threw out the gum and one card from each pack it was stuck to. The gum was a nasty nasty colour and well yuck, didn't want it in the house so it is well gone and thrown. As for the cards...let's take a look...

Funny...this isn't the set I thought it was, as the gross out type set I have (and hadn't specifically cataloged, is different. No matter, I won't be keeping these, though likely using as packaging material.

Pack 1 (the 8 remaining cards which are in good shape):

Well...they are colourful and somewhat disgusting like garbage pail kids. I can see how they could have appealed to kids at the time...not sure about the parents getting them though....

Pack 2:

A second pack, and there is one dupe from the first, so you can see the scanned back. They try to be funny - I am sure kids again would find these funny.

Personally, I like Four eyed Freddie - his position is seeing-eye umpire. Apparently in the off-season he designed the LA Freeway exits - I will assume I can understand why that would be funny, but leave it to any of you who know better to agree or disagree (either back when the cards were new - or now).

Well, this is something I may never cover again, but still, interesting in an unusual kinds of way.

Bringing Back Another Pack from the CNE and Donruss '91

Another set knocked out of the Thanksgiving cards. There were about....say 500 1991 Donruss series 1 (the blue ones) cards. This is another set I already have completed and as such will generally be looking for Jays and error cards (and yes, some new trade fodder too I guess).

I didn't need more Jays for the team set, but did need a couple extra cards for the error binder....

I will take any reason for keeping Diamond King cards...

As for the Jays...

Anyway, here is another package of cards from my stop at the CNE back in September.

First up, some football that doesn't mean a whole lot to me and my collection, but let me know if any of them interest you...

As for why I picked up this pack...

The Johnny Ray was the card on one side - so that was good enough for me.

This Delgado prospect card puts this pack in the win regardless of the rest. Any surprise Jay card, especially one that I didn't have before, is a great add from these.

A few excellently photographed Stadium Club cards, though Tommy looks confused.

A random, early 80s Paul Reinhart Flames sticker...

Didn't need this though as 1991-92 O Pee Chee is competed and in my collection - but excellent photo with the Cup.

A couple 1995-96 Pinnacle which show how to waster a bit too much space with design on the bottom of the card...and lastly...

1992-93 O Pee Chee which at least is a set I don't have too much of, so these were nice adds.

Again, a bit of everything in this pack, but end up with 26 cards (well - 25 cards and one sticker).

Pack Attack - 2013-14 Panini Stickers

First, I wish I had more to give....I did a trade with dicefoot at TCDB and was only able to fill some needs regarding 1994 Panini baseball stickers. What I received in return included a few little oddball goodies.

Some nice oddballs like;
- 1992 Proctor and Gamble Alomar
- Topps Magazine
- Humpty Dumpty (man, I remember getting those back in the day, wish I saved them all)
- One hockey card of Douggie which is a 3D McD

Too bad those 3D cards have heavy tendency to curve. Will get a bit better once in a page,...

In other cards for me news...so I got these from Trevor over at Supporting The Minnow, and figured I'd open them today and see if I luck out with a Leaf or two...

Pack 1:

Man, this pack has some legs....and a bunch of goalies....and an online code card (honestly, does everything have those type of codes these days...).

An interesting take on the design using the team logo for the background. Not a bad idea, and different than a full action shot, but it looks too lost because of how much the player photo takes up. Not a complaint per se, just an observation.

Pack 2:

No goalies at all in this pack, but more so, no Leafs in either unfortunately.

Oh well, a bit of a stinkier with no Leafs, but all new to me anyway, so there is that going for them at least.

I doubt they still work, but if anyone wants the sticker codes, they were - NQMD-X1IL-52EH and NG5Z-61IT-J2LU assuming I typed those out correctly.

Quad Wars - 2013-14 Score Hockey - Top Right

Was able to get through another set from the Thanksgiving cards I got. This time, 1990 Score. Again, I had a complete set, so pulled the Jays and error cards to keep...

A bit surprised with about 1,000 cards, there were only 7 Jays, but still, a couple of these were needs for the Jays team set.

A few missing error cards too - easy one to point out is the Ryne card, as this version is missing his position on the front which you can see placed on the other base cards.

With that, on to the last day for this box, and frankly, ending on a down note. Well - let's look anyway...

Wow - would have been great to be a Bruins or Flame collector indeed. That aside, the Leader card looks much better with the border compared to the whiteness of the "normal" base card.

Beyond these, only one other insert/parallel:

I can understand the concept of documenting first goals, but some will be important players in the future, others not so much. Alright design, but meh as an insert.

Leaf content:

No inserts, etc, just four more base cards.

As for the glimpse at the rest...

Have to get the Crosby base card in there, and any Montreal card including a flame. Seeing the Leader cards again here, yeah, I like the gold parallel much better.

So after this box, end up with about 62.6% of the base set completed. I was happy there were few dupes in all, and those, I believe, all had to do with the cards I previously had (no dupes within the box, which is typical collation these days, I hope). I am not going to push this as a must collect set, but I can see getting some more of it done gradually, and to a point where I try to finish it off, but I think the first day squeaked out to be the best from this box given the auto.
