The focus of my attention today, when opening a couple more packs of 2021-22 Upper Deck MVP hockey, came down to the mascot card for a number of reasons, and it's in the first pack...
As I opened some packs before in getting the first 75 cards of the base set in hand, not a complete surprise that there were going to be packs with a run of duplicates as there were only two new base for me in this one, but let's talk about Chance.
Chance is a Gila monster - a type of venomous lizard. Venomous lizards are definitely a type of mascot which I could see strike fear into the name of opponents, but that's not the name of the team. We don't have the Lax Vegas Gila Monsters - we have the Las Vegas Golden Knights. The name Golden Knights has no connection to Gila monsters so it's a mismatch in trying to cover two different connections - one being a personal connection of Golden Knights as a nod to the owner's alma mater, and the Gila monster mascot being a more fierce mascot for the team, connecting to a reptile of the area. I guess the name Chance is supposed to the tie into the gambling nature of Vegas.
I guess it works to cover different aspects of the team, but just not something I think we see in sports very much - the Blue Jays have a Blue Jay bird as their mascot which ties to the name of course - straightforward and consistent. Simple enough, and much preferred, by me at least.
No such issues in the second pack as we just have a nice silver script parallel which fall every 5 packs. A bit surprised we don't have any Leaf content yet, but sure that will come.

Had no idea Gila monsters lived around Las Vegas. Regardless... kind of a weird mascot for the Knights.
ReplyDeleteLove the mascots from this set. I have some waiting to be shipped in my comc box, I believe.
