Nice Ice

Good things come to those who wait. Today makes up for yesterday a bit with a few nice collection adds.

Highlights:

A few really nice cards here. Yanic was more prominent with Toronto in the early 90s, but returns later in the decade as shown here. The McDonald's Ohlund is best of the bunch though. I am a sucked for the acetate "see through" look.

Keepers:

I'm glad there were some Leaf cards as we get a bit overrun by Montreal cards here and below. Both these cards are from his second run in Montreal. Like Yanic in Toronto, I think the first run was their remembered one, but both wanted to return to the respective cities before retiring.

Traders:

Yeah - so three of the Corson Upper Deck Gold Reserve cards, all at once. A card that is nice, but scans not so great - very much like Black Diamond cards. I think I need to connect with a Montreal collector and just do a straight up trade Montreal for Toronto cards to just get rid of some of these.

Mid week slump

No highlights or breakout of cards for today's discussion because nothing but traders today. Since we have two sets covered in the cards, let's take a quick look at what the sets are.

1991 Upper Deck Football
The set was the first for Upper Deck in football, and as they did in baseball, the set was huge at 700 cards. The design is generally similar to the design used in baseball sets of the era. The first 600 cards of the set are the "low numbered" with the last 100 cards being the "high numbered". This is akin to later "first series" and "second series" runs of sets.



2007-08 Upper Deck Hockey
As noted above, this is the later, split into a series 1 and series 2. Haven't seen much of series 1, but all over series 2 from this one through the Santa Lot. Each of the two sets consisted of 250 cards (500 in total).

Not New(bury) to this

Before I get into the usual - let me share what will likely be my last two Listia wins for a while. With the currency change over and the busy time of April, I probably won't do much there for a while.


First card of Greene I have and I really like the leaders card from 2016 Topps, so picked that one up well in a separate auction, both fairly cheap. Nice specific adds, which is what I find Listia is good for.

Highlights:

Obviously not a new card for me (actually the fourth I believe). Newbury played parts of two seasons (and one game in a third) for Toronto before spending some time with Detroit, New York and Philly.

Keepers:

A bit disappointing just getting the one additional new card today. Zach had four full seasons with Edmonton and that was essentially his NHL career.

I will say, the Welsch card is pretty nice with the green from the uniforms combined with the name colour use, etc. Just works really well.

Lastly before I go, just to update...after sending out a couple more packages, my traded away card total is now 2,224, so getting close to half way to the 5,000 goal for the year and it isn't even the end of April yet.

Don't really consider this an Artifact...

Highlight:

I have talked before about Artifact sets and how much I generally enjoy them. This is from one of the designs that just doesn't do much for me and honestly feels outside the normal realm of what I think of as Artifacts sets. I am happy to get this as it is a new for me card, but yeah, not one of my favourites.

Lowlights:

Pesky gum stains. Sheldon is known for his advocacy against abuse such as what he suffered through the hands of Graham James. His hockey career didn't last long - whether the abuse played into that at all would be anyone's guess though I would never try to walk in someone else's shoes. A bad situation that Sheldon has worked hard to ensure others would not have to suffer through.

A decent enough bunch today. Glad to find one of the last remaining needs for 2007-08 Upper Deck Series 2 if nothing else.

Traders:


Yeah - one keeper from the set and plenty more dupes for 2007-08 Upper Deck Series 2.

No April Fool

I was thinking this would be a great day to talk about forgeries, fake cards and the like and the fools who make such things. Maybe another time though. Hopefully I didn't make a fool of myself today though as I placed my first order with First Row Collectibles (www.firstrow.ca). I saw their 40$ off madness sale which is on singles, and ended up with some other stuff instead. Was it a good idea? Well, I have to wait and see what shows up to be honest but I have heard good things about them, so now to see what it is like first hand.

As for recent pick ups - I happily picked up some new Artifact cards for the Magic card collection.

I recently did a survey, reward for which was a $20 gift card. Since I spent my half hour doing the survey, I thought why not spend it on cards, since it was basically free money anyway. So, I went to 401games after placing an order online and picked the cards up. I debated more cards or less but higher value, and ended up going for more middling priced and got about 40 cards for $20. I also aimed for a few sets that I don't have many cards from to fill things out a bit.

The Dark:

These cards are out of 1994 and generally not cards that have a place in my Artifact deck then (or now), but a couple fun cards nonetheless.

Coal Golem just is classic, awesome, artwork from early Magic cards - that alone made it worth picking up.

Wand of Ith could be fun in forcing choices on opponents to help them lose their own life.

7th Edition

Beast of Burden could be a pretty interesting card if you swarm a lot of little creatures.


These are cards I have in different sets, but 7th had a ton of different artwork, so I wanted to pick these up.


I am a sucker for massive creatures like the Hulk here, but the flavour text makes it that much better. Some of the flavour text is so much better than the card themselves.


This Wall of Spears artwork is much better than the original and is clearly a wall made up of spears.



9th Edition

Like 7th edition, 9th was not a set I was around playing at the time, to collect. 7th was the cusp of my leaving the game for the decade or so that I did while 9th was a few years into the time off.


I picked up a couple foil parallels. Interesting having the black borders on the parallels when the base set is otherwise in white borders.


Aladdin's Ring was always a nice use of extra mana and an ability to do a quick 4 damage.



Howling Mine was the most expensive of the cards I picked up being $4. It was great for getting more cards as my artifact decks always seemed plentiful for mana, and no cards to use them on. I still prefer the older picture, but this one is decent too.



Rise of the Eldrazi

Just the one card from the set as I needed to round out the price on the purchase.

A great lot of cards to add to the collection, and I like the old white borders. The black does look sleeker, but I remember playing without sleeves, the white borders getting a bit dirty, and sitting there with soft erasers cleaning them up without damaging the cards.

A different time, a different games in many ways too.
