Adding a Phenom

Yeah, given my enjoyment of wrestling, first thought is an Undertaker card, but not in this case as we are looking at some Tim Horton's cards.



I really like a lot of the insert sets from the Tim Hortons cards the last few years. Anything that is see-through is awesome to me. Don't know, just seems really cool. And silver done right is a plus as well - card of Iginla scans excellently as seen here.

A few base set helpers. I love how well the colour scans with the fade off to the top and bottom.

Here we have the one insert (non-Leaf) that I would have really wanted, and now I have - the nicely golden Sidney Crosby. The Clear Cut Pettersson doesn't hurt either!

Another great bunch of cards circa Jeff Scott. Tomorrow, we can go through some McD that he had in the cards sent my way - definitely some adds and some send aways, but I'm lovin' it!

Some Hockay Card Day In Canada

I don't think I have ever actually made it out to a card store on National Hockey Card Day - so all of the hockey card day related cards I have picked up have been from others.

Today is no exception as the cards from Jeff Scott included some Canadian National Hockey Card Day cards which were new to me.



In 2015, we had a more full picture design with, as you can see, the last third of the card taken up by the front logo/name plate. I like the use of the red and gold through any of these designs, it is a nice consistency with most of the sets.



Here we have some 2017 year cards. More red, less picture, but solid. Also, Wayne Gretzky as an Oiler which is the right way to show him, especially on the Canadian release.




Hard to see Gretzky from his heyday without thinking of Messier, and here he is on the 2018 design. Again, these go with more gold design - reminds me of the 2010 set which I was able to put together from the packs I got from Dave & Adams.



We end with 2019 and my first cards from this set. The gold is generally taken over by a red and silver design, which is nice, but when I think of Canada and hockey, I always prefer the gold!

2011-12 Score Hockey

I could totally use this as a start to really trying to collect the set - but that's not really my intent with the cards from the Jeff Scott collection I am going through. Sure, I'll take out the cards that do fit what I already collect, but I am not going to take the opportunity to start sets I didn't already like or want to collect.

I do want to move away a lot of the cards he gave me and try to turn a bunch into Bruins cards that I can get to him...eventually.

So today, 2011-12 Score.

The base set starts off with the Season Highlights subset, which isn't a bad way to start. Not sure the Season Highlight wording on the front needed to be so big and take up so much real estate, but it does stand out. Also helps when you get a nice perspective like the Mikka shot.

I appreciate the little team specific changes such as the colouring for the names and team name lines - makes the cards look that much better when team collecting. Some times I wonder if they should go far enough to try and use similar jersey picks for each team within a single set, but that may be asking too much.

A decent Quick shot, and there seem to be a decent number of horizontal cards in this set (boo).

Ah - back when Subban was a rookie. Again, the All Rookie team strip may be a little bigger than say, having a little logo, but the message does come across clearly!

Here is a good example - with the orange jerseys for Philly, these bottom three cards just stand out so much, and in a good way!

There's an unusual shot for a goalie with Halak well out of his net.

The end of the set has a couple more subsets shown here, the Stanley Cup highlights and then of course the Hot Rookies.

The colours again matching the team, make these look a bit off when together, but nice when in a team set.

There were a few uncorrected error cards...

and some inserts and parallels...

Still love the Net Cam insert most, but that Making an Entrance shot is pretty nice as well.

I will say that I do find it helpful when these cards...

Actually say "Glossy" above and below the card number on the back so there is no mistaking them. Thank goodness!

Hy Man!

So guess who recently arrived...



Hy! Nice to see you! Awesome little card that is now nicely into a little one touch protective case and on a shelf showing himself off in the basement. Sure, probably worth more trying to sell it now than holding on to it and letting the price drop, but this isn't about investing, it's about having a nice card for the Leaf collection.

Not all for today - more Jeff Scott cards to share starting with a bunch of parallels and a couple inserts that are decent keeps...



Some of the Ultra sets go for the full background gold colouring which is just too overwhelming, this design though - I really like. Simple but effective in making the normal edging gold instead of silver/grey as you will see later.



Not much to say about this card except, absolutely Crosby is a go to helper so he better be in this insert set!



Never a complaint to highlight achievements in a subset, but this design is not for me. To much going on in the background as far as the colouring go - but both achievements definitely worth an insert card.

This not being a base set I am collecting, will be find home for these...



Solid Elliott goalie pose and the nice retro Pens jerseys for Kunitz - definitely some nice cards in the set.



As you can see, the normal design isn't bad, and the gold parallel works well. As for the Ultra rookies - you can see how the gold version could be overwhelming.

I will say, I do like the feel of the Ultra sets, they are a good thickness - one issue I don't know that I ever had with Ultra sets. Yeah, the little things like this I definitely notice, as I expect most do.

Trying to tell from these first few sets if there is any preference in teams, just out of curiosity, ones that didn't end up going anywhere before finding their way to me, but no real feel on that yet.

Scoring to start the month

A new month, a new set of cards to show from Jeff Scott's stuff passed my way.

Today, another set that is in my slow builds, so let's see what we have...



2013-14 Score. You pretty much know what you are going to get with Score - a solid and fairly cheap set (but not Victory cheap), which is pretty big (650 cards here) and not a lot in the hits department.

I actually have over 60% of the set, so happy to inch closer to 2/3rd done being able to add these base cards. I like the leaders subset too. With the multi-head pose, the white actually tends to help the design I think.



We also have a single add to the gold border parallel set, and one of the really awesome Net Cam inserts. Sure, a lot of goalie derriere in the shot, but still an amazing rink view you don't usually see on cards.



We end with a couple pages of cards that are up for grabs...well, at the moment, I am hoping I can simply sort them to different people and make them disappear...shhhhh!

The end and the beginning

Yay, last day of April, except it doesn't mean as much since deadlines have been extended. Totally understand the reasoning, and it makes sense, but it does mean busier times still ahead. In some ways I rather have a crazy April and be done instead of a very busy April and very busy May, but so be it.

Anyway, a quick pick of cards from those Jeff Scott gave me...2008-09 Upper Deck Victory.

This is a set I am collecting, so let's see what I have for additions here...



A little less than half the cards are adds, but happily a few of the high numbered rookie cards. Of the rookies, Theo ended up with the most NHL experience being in about 160 games over 6 seasons, all with Edmonton.

The cards I will look to find a home for...



Solid cards that I just happen to already have, and that at times look a bit too similar, like Morrow and White - just not too varied for poses.

Anyway, see you all on the other side...well, what use to be the other side and the best day of the year - May 1st...
