Continuing To Be Mastered

Today, a recent bit of catch up in Magic cards from a couple more recent sets. I picked up some singles from the Jurassic park inspired Lost Caverns set, and some from Ravnica Remastered as well. I will show the cards below, but want to talk about their boosters as those are changing, again.

Back before 2017, sets were released in boosters - no name to it, just a usual 15 card booster pack. It was then decided that it would be "split" and there would be two types of boosters, Draft and Set. The purpose of Draft was to use them to draft and play the game - hence the name, where as Set were a bit more for collecting and contained some more premium cards, less cards higher price point, but just a bit, not like Collector boosters which will continue on as is, untouched.

No surprise to me that they found it confusing, and shops having issues figuring out what people would buy and want and logistics all askew, it's been about 7 years of, why did they bother doing it?

So, my understanding in that Ravnica Remastered is the last set with Draft Boosters (and has no set boosters), then the next release will only have "Play Boosters".

So the end result is - a Play booster may have a bit "more" to it at times than a draft booster, but not be as good as a set booster and have 14 cards instead of 15. That's a lot of change for something that honestly, didn't need to be messed with in the first place. They had boosters and collector boosters, and no more than that should have been needed.

I am glad to only have to buy the one type of booster (and the Collector) for each set going forward, will save me $6 or so per set, so no complaints there. Just wish they didn't bother with the experiment in the first place when they essentially end up back where they were, with a tweaked drop rate for cards in the booster, and one less playable card.

Still, shout out to 401games for always having what I am looking for Magic card wise, and the pack art continues to be pretty darn good.

I guess I shouldn't complain since sports cards do the same type of thing - different odds hobby versus retail, versus blaster, and stores having their own parallels to worry about....

  1. I don't play MTG, but I do think about collecting it for the artwork. Those artifact creatures really call out to me.
