Let's Keep Talking Sosa

From what I remember back in 1998 when the world was watch the race to beat the home run record, I'm not sure many people had a scathing opinion of wanting McGwire to beat Sosa or vice versa. It always seemed more of a competition, but that there was no animosity or hatred between the two, so I at least was happy to see them both just do there best and push each other.

The fact they ended at 70 and 66 home runs was amazing to see as a fan. Looking back now, Sammy had a home run total each year of 66, 63, 50, 64, 49 from 1998 to 2002. We can get into the juiced balls, juiced players and other potential reasons, but the stats stand out regardless. You will never be able to fairly compare someone like Ruth to these accomplishments because there are so many different factors to consider like quality of pitching, ball composition, ballpark dimensions, but that's what makes those discussions so interesting.

Other Sammy tidbit - a number of his cards in the early 90s were uncorrected error cards as his date of birth is listing wrong on many (being listing as Oct 11 instead of Nov 12), if you are interested in that type of thing.

Oh - and a good day with a couple Blue Jays here, but that's not anything Sammy related since he only played for the Cubs, that people remember. Not sure people recall his time with the Rangers (twice), White Sox, or Orioles.

  1. I don't remember any animosity between Sosa and McGwire... but I remember my friends and I were definitely rooting for one or the other.
